Major changes were done to the firebird in 1982. No longer was there a Pontiac engine underneigth the hood. Instead, a 2.5L 4 cylinder engine powered the base firebird while a 5.0L V8 motivated the Trans Am. There were two different 5.0L V8 to choose from, 4 barrel carburated or TBI. Modifications were made to the suspension. In the front, MacPherson struts were used and coil springs replaced the spring leafs in the rear.

A hit show called Knight Rider first appeared in 1982. It featured David Hasselhoff as Michale Knight, and a indestructable Pontiac Trans-Am named KITT. Of the many feature Kitt had, his best was the abilty to talk. The show aired from 1982 to 1986.

The 5.0 HO V8 liter were available for the '83 Trans Am. Trans Ams with the HO V8 also had a axle ratio of 3.73:1 and included the WS6 suspension package.

In 1984, all base and S/E Firebirds got GM's fourth-generation steelbelted radial tires. Standard WS6 suspension got revised, and a larger 25 mm rear sway bar was used.

Firebirds got restyled in 1985. New front and rear end resulted in better aerodynamics. Trans Am's standard suspension was upgraded to 1984 WS6 specifications, but it did not include the four-wheel disc brakes.

The 1986 Firebirds featured new nose, taillight, a rear-hatch-mounted third brake light. This was also the last year for the S/E model and the 2.5L four-cylinder engine.
